How long has eBay been in business?

eBay was launched in September 1995. The first auction was conducted on Labor Day, and within a few weeks, buyers and sellers began flocking to the service.

How does eBay make money?

Our net transaction revenues from our Marketplaces segment are derived primarily from listing and final value fees paid by sellers. For our Payments segment, net transaction revenues are generated primarily by fees paid by merchants for payment processing services. Our Communications segment net transaction revenues are generated primarily from fees charged to users to connect Skype's VoIP product to traditional fixed-line and mobile telephones. These fees are charged on a per-minute basis or on a subscription basis and we refer to these minutes as SkypeOut minutes. Our marketing services and other revenue are generated from all three of our business segments. Our marketing services are derived principally from the sale of advertisements, revenue sharing arrangements, classifieds fees and lead referral fees. Our other revenues are derived principally from interest earned from banks on certain PayPal customer account balances, interest and fees earned on the Bill Me Later loan portfolio and from contractual arrangements with third parties that provide services to all of our users.

eBay's year-end is December 31st. Reporting quarters correspond with calendar quarters.

As of December 31, 2008, eBay Inc. and its subsidiaries employed approximately 16,200 people (including temporary employees). Our future success is substantially dependent on the performance of our executive and senior management and key technical personnel, and our continuing ability to find and retain highly qualified technical and managerial personnel.

eBay has had four stock splits since going public.

The first split was a 3 for 1 stock split which occurred on March 2, 1999 at the open of the market. The second split was a 2 for 1 stock split which occurred on May 25, 2000 at the open of the market. The third split was a 2 for 1 which occurred on August 29, 2003 at the open of the market. The fourth split was a 2 for 1 which occurred on February 17, 2005 at the open of the market.
